Terrazzo hints for Tuesday, August 25, 2026
Mosaic № 18. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from art.
The caption reads: “Hokusai's wave was printed, not painted — thousands of times.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 8 stones into a frame of 32 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Great Wave
Katsushika Hokusai was about seventy when he designed 'Under the Wave off Kanagawa' around 1831 — a woodblock print, carved and inked so it could be produced by the thousands and sold for roughly the price of a bowl of noodles. The wave's claw of foam looms over Mount Fuji, the sacred mountain shrunk to a triangle in the distance; the boats beneath are delivery vessels, working men bent to their oars. Its deep color came from Prussian blue, a pigment newly imported to Japan. Cheap art, honestly made, became one of the most reproduced images on Earth.
