Mosaic № 19. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from history.
The caption reads: “Farmers redrew whole mountains, one level line at a time.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 9 stones into a frame of 38 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Terraced Fields
Rice terraces are mountains reshaped into staircases of water. Each terrace is a flat, flooded field held by a hand-built wall, and each spills precisely into the next, so a single spring can irrigate a whole slope. The oldest systems — in the Philippine Cordilleras, in southern China — have been maintained continuously for as much as two thousand years, passed between generations like an inheritance that must be fed. They prevent erosion, harvest rainfall, and turn impossible farmland into some of the most productive on Earth. Engineering rarely looks this much like calligraphy.
