Terrazzo hints for Thursday, August 27, 2026
Mosaic № 20. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from science.
The caption reads: “The world's most popular drug is a plant's pesticide.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 8 stones into a frame of 40 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 3 separate regions of 9, 3, 1; lapis blue forms 3 separate regions of 5, 4, 1; moss green forms 6 separate regions of 4, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1; terracotta forms 6 separate regions of 3, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
A Caffeine Molecule
Caffeine exists because coffee and tea plants are in a chemical arms race with insects: the molecule is a natural pesticide that paralyzes and kills bugs that chew the leaves. In humans the dose is friendlier. Caffeine's shape happens to fit the brain's adenosine receptors — the docking sites for the molecule that accumulates all day and makes you feel tired. Caffeine parks in the receptor and blocks the message. It does not add energy; it hides the fatigue report. Two billion cups of coffee a day suggest humanity has made its peace with the deception.
