Mosaic № 21. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from history.
The caption reads: “One decree, three scripts, and a locked civilization reopened.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 8 stones into a frame of 45 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms one region of 4; lapis blue forms 2 separate regions of 7, 1; moss green forms 3 separate regions of 15, 5, 1; terracotta forms 4 separate regions of 8, 2, 1, 1.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Rosetta Stone
The Rosetta Stone is not a mysterious text — it is a perfectly ordinary tax decree from 196 BC. Its importance is that the same dull proclamation was carved three times: in hieroglyphs, in Egyptian demotic script, and in Greek. Greek could still be read, which turned the stone into an answer key for a writing system that had been silent for nearly fifteen centuries. Jean-François Champollion cracked the system in 1822, proving hieroglyphs recorded sounds, not just symbols. Every museum label about ancient Egypt since then is a footnote to one bureaucratic slab.
