Mosaic № 23. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from cosmos.
The caption reads: “A hundred thousand kilometers wide, and thinner than a building is tall.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 10 stones into a frame of 64 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 3 separate regions of 7, 1, 1; lapis blue forms 2 separate regions of 16, 1; moss green forms 3 separate regions of 11, 3, 2; terracotta forms 4 separate regions of 14, 6, 1, 1.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Saturn's Rings
Saturn's rings span a distance that would not quite fit between Earth and its Moon, yet in most places they are less than a hundred meters thick — proportionally thinner than a sheet of paper the size of a city. They are not solid: billions of chunks of nearly pure water ice, from dust grains to house-sized boulders, each on its own orbit, shepherded into bands and gaps by the gravity of small moons. They are also likely temporary. Ring material is raining steadily onto the planet; in a hundred million years or so, the show may close.
