Mosaic № 24. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from art.
The caption reads: “Medieval craftsmen laid out mathematics that would be named centuries later.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 6 stones into a frame of 32 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 2 separate regions of 4, 1; lapis blue forms 2 separate regions of 13, 6; moss green forms 2 separate regions of 5, 1; terracotta forms 2 separate regions of 1, 1.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Alhambra Tiles
The tile work of the Alhambra palace in Granada, laid mostly in the fourteenth century, is a textbook of symmetry written before the textbook existed. Mathematicians now know there are exactly seventeen fundamentally different ways a flat pattern can repeat — the seventeen wallpaper groups, proven in the nineteenth century. The Alhambra's artisans, working with faith-driven geometric abstraction, are widely credited with realizing nearly all of them in glazed clay. M. C. Escher visited in 1922 and 1936, copied patterns for days, and left with the obsession that produced his interlocking birds and fish.
