Mosaic № 25. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from science.
The caption reads: “The molecule that eats sunlight and exhales the sky's oxygen.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 7 stones into a frame of 36 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Chlorophyll
Nearly every calorie you have ever eaten started as sunlight caught by chlorophyll. The molecule sits in plant cells like a satellite dish, its ring of atoms tuned to absorb red and blue light while rejecting green — which is the only reason forests are the color they are. The captured energy splits water and stitches carbon dioxide into sugar; the oxygen is discarded as exhaust. That waste product, accumulating over two billion years, became the atmosphere you are breathing between sentences. Every leaf is a solar panel with a better publicist.
