Mosaic № 26. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from history.
The caption reads: “Not one road, and never only silk.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 7 stones into a frame of 42 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Silk Road
The Silk Road was a shifting web of caravan routes linking China to the Mediterranean for some fifteen hundred years. Silk moved west, but so did paper, gunpowder, peaches, and chess; glass, horses, silver, and astronomy moved east. Few merchants ever walked the whole way — goods changed hands at oasis towns like relay batons, gaining a markup at every exchange. The road's real cargo was contact: Buddhism reached China along it, and so, less happily, did plague. Trade routes, it turns out, carry everything a civilization has, not just what it sells.
