Terrazzo hints for Friday, September 4, 2026
Mosaic № 28. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from cosmos.
The caption reads: “A photograph of everyone, taken from four billion miles away.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 10 stones into a frame of 45 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 4 separate regions of 5, 4, 2, 1; lapis blue forms 2 separate regions of 5, 1; moss green forms 2 separate regions of 9, 4; terracotta forms 3 separate regions of 12, 1, 1.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Pale Blue Dot
On Valentine's Day 1990, as Voyager 1 left the planets behind, engineers turned its camera back toward the Sun at Carl Sagan's urging. In one frame, caught inside a stray band of scattered sunlight, sits a single bright pixel: Earth, from six billion kilometers. Sagan's reflection on the image became famous — every saint and tyrant, every war and childhood, 'everyone you ever heard of,' on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. The spacecraft that took it is still traveling, now in interstellar space, carrying a golden record of the dot's music.
