Mosaic № 29. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from nature.
The caption reads: “A thousand starlings, no leader, one shape.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 9 stones into a frame of 49 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Murmuration
A murmuration has no conductor. Each starling tracks precisely seven neighbours — not the birds within a fixed distance, but the seven nearest, whoever they happen to be. That one rule, repeated across thousands of birds, is enough: a turn at the edge crosses the whole flock in a fraction of a second, faster than any bird could react to a signal. Physicists studying the phenomenon found the mathematics matched systems on the brink of a phase change, like metal about to magnetise. The flock is not following anyone. It is a material that happens to be made of birds.
