Mosaic № 30. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.

Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?

Today's subject comes from history.

The caption reads: “A computer built two thousand years before computers.”

Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words

You place 11 stones into a frame of 67 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.

Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.

The answer: what the mosaic shows

The Antikythera Mechanism

Sponge divers found it in 1901 in a Roman shipwreck: a corroded lump of bronze the size of a shoebox. It took a century and X-ray tomography to understand. Inside were at least thirty interlocking gears, cut by hand, that modelled the movements of the sun and moon, predicted eclipses, and tracked the four-year cycle of the games at Olympia. One gear train even reproduced the moon's varying speed across the sky. Nothing of comparable complexity survives from the next fourteen hundred years. It is not evidence of lost magic — it is evidence of how much ordinary knowledge a civilisation can simply drop.
