Terrazzo hints for Monday, September 7, 2026
Mosaic № 31. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from science.
The caption reads: “It survives by ceasing, temporarily, to be alive.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 7 stones into a frame of 32 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 3 separate regions of 7, 1, 1; lapis blue forms 3 separate regions of 9, 1, 1; moss green forms 2 separate regions of 5, 2; terracotta forms 2 separate regions of 4, 1.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Water Bear
A tardigrade is half a millimetre long and looks like a gummy bear with too many legs. When its water disappears it performs a trick called cryptobiosis: it expels nearly all its moisture, curls into a desiccated grain called a tun, and replaces the lost water with a sugar-like glass that holds every cell structure in place. Metabolism stops — not slows, stops. In that state it has survived boiling, freezing to near absolute zero, radiation that would kill a human hundreds of times over, and the raw vacuum of space. Add a drop of water and it walks away.
