Terrazzo hints for Tuesday, September 8, 2026
Mosaic № 32. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from nature.
The caption reads: “The forest is trading underground, and keeping accounts.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 7 stones into a frame of 36 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Wood Wide Web
Beneath a forest floor runs a network of fungal threads so fine that a teaspoon of soil can hold several kilometres of them. The fungi wrap around tree roots and trade: sugars from the tree, which can photosynthesise, for phosphorus and nitrogen the fungus is better at mining. Radioactive carbon tracing has shown sugars moving from tree to tree along these threads — sometimes from a sunlit adult to a shaded seedling of a different species entirely. The exchange is not charity. Fungi tax the transfer, and favour the partners who pay best. The forest is less a crowd than a market.
