Mosaic № 33. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from art.
The caption reads: “Four boys, a dog down a hole, and seventeen thousand years.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 8 stones into a frame of 36 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Lascaux
In 1940 four teenagers followed their dog into a fissure near Montignac and found a chamber of painted bulls, horses and stags — some of them five metres long. The painters worked by lamplight with ochre, charcoal and manganese, blowing pigment through hollow bone to airbrush a mane. They used the cave's own bulges to give a shoulder its volume. Within twenty years of opening to visitors, breath and body heat had bloomed algae and crystals across the walls; the cave was sealed in 1963. What survived seventeen millennia of darkness could not survive a decade of being looked at.
