Mosaic № 34. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.

Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?

Today's subject comes from nature.

The caption reads: “It matches colours it cannot see.”

Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words

You place 8 stones into a frame of 38 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.

Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.

The answer: what the mosaic shows

The Cuttlefish

A cuttlefish can shift its skin to match a chequerboard, a bed of gravel, or a strand of kelp in under a second, using millions of pigment sacs it controls individually, like a screen with muscles for pixels. The strange part: every test says the cuttlefish is colour-blind. It has one visual pigment where we have three. The leading explanation is that its oddly shaped pupil smears incoming light into its colours, and the animal judges hue by racking focus, the way you would find a colour by hunting for the sharpest edge. It may be seeing colour by feel.
