Terrazzo hints for Friday, September 11, 2026
Mosaic № 35. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from history.
The caption reads: “An empire's records, written in knots.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 8 stones into a frame of 44 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 3 separate regions of 6, 3, 1; lapis blue forms 2 separate regions of 18, 7; moss green forms 2 separate regions of 2, 1; terracotta forms 3 separate regions of 4, 1, 1.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Quipu
The Inca ran a state of twelve million people across three thousand kilometres without writing as we define it. They used quipu: a cord with dozens of hanging strings, encoded by knot type, knot position, ply direction, and colour. Numbers we can read — the system is decimal, with position marking powers of ten. Census figures, tribute, storehouse inventories all survive. But some quipu carry patterns too irregular to be numbers, and Spanish chroniclers described specialists reading histories and letters from cords. If those are narrative, an entire literature is sitting in museum drawers, fully preserved and perfectly unreadable.
