Mosaic № 39. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from nature.
The caption reads: “Some of these trees were already old when the pyramids were new.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 6 stones into a frame of 35 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Bristlecone
Great Basin bristlecone pines grow at the treeline in dolomite soil that almost nothing else tolerates, and they grow appallingly slowly — sometimes a hundredth of an inch of ring in a year. That slowness is the secret: the wood is so dense and resinous that it resists rot, insects and fire, and a trunk may stand for millennia after death. The oldest living individual has passed 4,800 years. In 1964 a researcher cut one down to count its rings and discovered afterwards that it had been the oldest tree ever found. Its stump is still there.
