Mosaic № 40. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from cosmos.
The caption reads: “A message in a bottle, thrown at the galaxy.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 7 stones into a frame of 39 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Golden Record
Bolted to each Voyager probe is a gold-plated copper phonograph record with instructions etched on its cover. It carries greetings in fifty-five languages, the sound of surf, a kiss, a mother's first words to her newborn, and ninety minutes of music from Bach to Chuck Berry to Javanese gamelan. Carl Sagan's committee had months to summarise humanity. Both probes are now beyond the heliosphere, moving at seventeen kilometres a second, and neither will pass near another star for tens of thousands of years. The record's electroplated surface should survive a billion years — far longer than the civilisation that pressed it.
