Mosaic № 41. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from nature.
The caption reads: “The flattest place on earth, and a mirror when it rains.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 8 stones into a frame of 43 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 2 separate regions of 5, 1; lapis blue forms 3 separate regions of 1, 1, 1; moss green forms one region of 11; terracotta forms 4 separate regions of 16, 5, 1, 1.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Salar de Uyuni
A prehistoric lake dried on the Bolivian altiplano and left ten thousand square kilometres of salt crust, so level that its surface varies by less than a metre across the entire expanse. Satellites use it to calibrate their altimeters. In the wet season a few centimetres of water sit on top with nowhere to drain, and the salt beneath turns the whole plain into a mirror — the horizon disappears and clouds run under your feet. Beneath the crust lies brine holding a substantial share of the world's lithium, which is to say: the reflection is sitting on top of the batteries.
