Terrazzo hints for Saturday, September 19, 2026
Mosaic № 43. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from art.
The caption reads: “Every pinhole is a lens, and always was.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 9 stones into a frame of 48 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Dark Room
Poke a hole in a shuttered wall and the sunlit world outside will paint itself, upside down, on the opposite wall. Mozi described it in China in the fifth century BCE; Ibn al-Haytham worked out the optics in Cairo around 1020. Renaissance painters built portable versions and traced the image, which may explain the sudden accuracy of certain interiors and the odd optical softness in Vermeer's edges. No lens is required at all — only a small enough hole and enough patience for the dimness. The camera did not invent the image. It invented a way to keep one.
