Mosaic № 45. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from art.
The caption reads: “A dome that seemed to hang from heaven by a chain.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 6 stones into a frame of 31 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 6 separate regions of 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1; lapis blue forms 2 separate regions of 10, 1; moss green forms 5 separate regions of 3, 1, 1, 1, 1; terracotta forms 4 separate regions of 3, 2, 1, 1.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Hagia Sophia
Justinian's architects were a mathematician and a physicist, not builders, and it shows: they spanned thirty-one metres with a dome pierced by forty windows at its base, so that light cuts the masonry from its supports and the whole weight appears to float. Procopius wrote that it seemed suspended by a golden chain. The first dome was too shallow and fell in an earthquake twenty years later; the replacement was raised steeper and has stood, with repairs, for fifteen centuries. For nearly a thousand years it was the largest enclosed space humans had ever made. Nobody built bigger because nobody knew how.
