Mosaic № 47. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from history.
The caption reads: “The blue that is not blue until it meets the air.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 7 stones into a frame of 39 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Indigo
Indigo does not dissolve in water, which makes it useless as a dye until you cheat: ferment the leaves in an oxygen-starved vat until the pigment converts to a soluble yellow-green form. Cloth dipped in that vat comes out looking sickly. Then, as it hangs in the air, oxygen finds it and the colour blooms blue in front of you, in seconds. Repeat for depth. Every indigo culture — Japanese, West African, Indian, Salvadoran — discovered independently that the vat must be kept alive, warm and fed like a sourdough starter. Denim is the last place most of us still meet it.
