Terrazzo hints for Thursday, September 24, 2026
Mosaic № 48. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from nature.
The caption reads: “Tree resin that kept its appointments.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 9 stones into a frame of 40 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: lapis blue forms 4 separate regions of 8, 6, 4, 1; moss green forms 2 separate regions of 5, 5; terracotta forms one region of 11.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Amber
Resin oozes from a wounded conifer, traps whatever is unlucky enough to be nearby, and hardens. Buried, compressed and slowly polymerised over millions of years, it becomes amber — and whatever it caught is preserved with a fidelity no fossil bone can match: a mosquito's wing scales, a spider mid-moult, a hundred-million-year-old flower with its pollen still on it, a lizard's foot with skin texture intact. Burmese amber has yielded a feathered dinosaur tail. The DNA, disappointingly, is long gone — it fragments within a few million years. What survives is not the animal's code. It is the animal's exact shape, in gold.
