Mosaic № 49. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.

Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?

Today's subject comes from history.

The caption reads: “The hard part was not the press. It was the metal.”

Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words

You place 10 stones into a frame of 52 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.

Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.

The answer: what the mosaic shows

Movable Type

Presses existed; so did paper, ink and the idea of printing from carved blocks. Gutenberg's real invention was an alloy — lead for softness, tin for flow, antimony because it expands slightly as it cools, filling the mould so each letter comes out crisp and identical. Paired with an adjustable hand mould that could cast any character to a uniform height, it meant thousands of reusable letters. Within fifty years European printers had produced perhaps twenty million books, more than all of Europe's scribes had made in the previous thousand years. He died in debt, having lost his workshop to a lawsuit from his investor.
