Terrazzo hints for Saturday, September 26, 2026
Mosaic № 50. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from nature.
The caption reads: “It hides by putting its blood away.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 9 stones into a frame of 52 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Glass Frog
Northern glass frogs have translucent undersides — you can watch the heart beat through the skin. That transparency has a problem: red blood cells absorb light and would show as a dark smudge on a leaf. So when the frog sleeps, it packs almost ninety percent of its red blood cells into its liver, which is mirrored with guanine crystals, and becomes two to three times more transparent. In any other animal, blood that concentrated and stationary would clot fatally. How the frog avoids that is unknown, and is being studied by people who would very much like to stop human clots.
