Terrazzo hints for Sunday, September 27, 2026
Mosaic № 51. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from art.
The caption reads: “The Japanese garden that annexes a mountain.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 10 stones into a frame of 60 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 3 separate regions of 8, 6, 2; lapis blue forms 3 separate regions of 8, 1, 1; moss green forms 2 separate regions of 15, 1; terracotta forms 4 separate regions of 10, 6, 1, 1.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Borrowed Scenery
Shakkei means borrowed scenery: the deliberate capture of a distant view into a garden's composition. A hedge is clipped and a window framed so that a mountain kilometres away becomes the garden's back wall, while the middle distance — roofs, roads, other people's trees — is hidden behind a wall or a screen of foliage. The technique requires knowing exactly where the viewer will stand, so gardens are built around a single stopping point, sometimes a single doorway. Done well, the effect is impossible to unsee: an entire mountain has been taken into private ownership without touching it.
