Mosaic № 52. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from nature.
The caption reads: “A mile of rock, and most of a billion years missing.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 6 stones into a frame of 32 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 4 separate regions of 4, 2, 2, 1; lapis blue forms 2 separate regions of 2, 1; moss green forms 2 separate regions of 12, 1; terracotta forms 4 separate regions of 3, 2, 1, 1.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Deep Time
Walk down into the Grand Canyon and you walk backward through roughly two billion years, layer by layer. Partway down you cross a plain surface where flat sedimentary beds sit directly on tilted, eroded rock beneath — the Great Unconformity. Something like a billion years of record is simply absent there: laid down, then lifted, then ground away entirely before the next layers arrived. James Hutton, seeing a similar gap in Scotland in 1788, wrote that the mind grew giddy looking so far into the abyss of time. The rock does not record history continuously. It records what happened not to be erased.
