Mosaic № 55. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.

Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?

Today's subject comes from nature.

The caption reads: “Forty thousand trees, one organism, one root.”

Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words

You place 7 stones into a frame of 38 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.

Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.

The answer: what the mosaic shows

Pando

On a Utah hillside stands a stand of quaking aspen that is not a stand at all. Every trunk — around forty-seven thousand of them, across a hundred acres — is a genetically identical stem sprouting from a single root system. Pando is one male clone, weighing perhaps six thousand tonnes, making it among the heaviest living things known. Age estimates run from several thousand to eighty thousand years, because the root outlives every trunk it raises. It is now failing: deer and elk eat the young shoots faster than they can establish, so the forest is old and not replacing itself. It is dying of being eaten one sprout at a time.
