Mosaic № 57. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from science.
The caption reads: “Single cells that build glass cathedrals.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 9 stones into a frame of 56 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Radiolaria
Radiolarians are single-celled plankton that construct mineral skeletons of opaline silica — lattices, spheres nested inside spheres, spires and anchors, at scales under a millimetre. Ernst Haeckel drew hundreds of them in the 1880s with such rapt precision that his plates changed European design, feeding directly into Art Nouveau ironwork and the entrance arches of the Paris Métro. When the cells die their glass sinks, and over millions of years builds seafloor ooze hundreds of metres thick. Chalk cliffs are made of ancient plankton armour. So, in places, is the ground beneath the deep Pacific.
