Mosaic № 58. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from history.
The caption reads: “It did not burn down. It was defunded.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 10 stones into a frame of 63 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 3 separate regions of 6, 1, 1; lapis blue forms one region of 8; moss green forms 4 separate regions of 12, 5, 4, 1; terracotta forms 3 separate regions of 13, 6, 6.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Library
The Library of Alexandria is remembered as a single catastrophe — Caesar's fire, or a caliph's order — but the evidence suggests something duller and sadder. It was damaged by fire in 48 BCE, yes, but scholars kept working there for centuries afterward. What actually ended it was attrition: the expulsion of foreign scholars, the loss of royal patronage, budget cuts to the stipends that fed the resident researchers, and the slow migration of talent to better-funded institutions elsewhere. Papyrus rots in humid air within a couple of centuries unless someone is paid to copy it. Nobody was. The books did not burn. They simply were not recopied.
