Terrazzo hints for Monday, October 5, 2026
Mosaic № 59. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from nature.
The caption reads: “It punches so fast the water boils.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 6 stones into a frame of 30 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 3 separate regions of 1, 1, 1; lapis blue forms 2 separate regions of 7, 1; moss green forms 4 separate regions of 6, 6, 1, 1; terracotta forms 2 separate regions of 3, 2.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Mantis Shrimp
A peacock mantis shrimp's club accelerates like a bullet from a .22, reaching over eighty kilometres an hour in the dense medium of seawater. The strike is so fast that the water behind it cannot fill the gap: a vapour cavity forms and collapses, producing a shockwave, a flash of light, and a second blow that lands even if the first one missed. Combined, the impact can crack crab shell and aquarium glass. The club survives its own violence thanks to a helical arrangement of mineral fibres that stops cracks from running straight — a structure now being copied in aerospace composites.
