Mosaic № 60. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from history.
The caption reads: “Knowing where you are at sea meant knowing what time it was at home.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 7 stones into a frame of 33 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Longitude Problem
Latitude is easy: measure the sun at noon. Longitude requires comparing local noon against the time at a reference port, and every hour of difference is fifteen degrees. So the problem was a clock that could keep time on a pitching, salt-soaked, temperature-swinging ship. Britain offered a fortune for a solution and expected an astronomer to win it. Instead a Yorkshire carpenter named John Harrison spent forty years building four successive clocks, ending with a five-inch watch that lost five seconds crossing the Atlantic. The board that owed him the prize spent years finding reasons not to pay.
