Terrazzo hints for Wednesday, October 7, 2026
Mosaic № 61. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from nature.
The caption reads: “Every night, the hummingbird nearly dies on purpose.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 7 stones into a frame of 36 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Torpor
A hummingbird's heart runs above a thousand beats a minute and its wings beat fifty times a second. That metabolism cannot be sustained through a night without food, so at dusk it enters torpor: heart rate falls to fifty, body temperature drops by more than twenty degrees, and it hangs from a twig, cold and unresponsive, sometimes upside down. Metabolic rate falls by up to ninety-five percent. Waking takes twenty minutes of violent shivering to bring the temperature back. A bird that spent the day burning through flowers spends the night as something closer to a leaf.
