Terrazzo hints for Thursday, October 8, 2026
Mosaic № 62. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from art.
The caption reads: “Venice moved its glassblowers to an island and would not let them leave.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 9 stones into a frame of 42 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms one region of 5; lapis blue forms 2 separate regions of 3, 1; moss green forms 3 separate regions of 10, 4, 1; terracotta forms one region of 18.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Mirror Makers
By the thirteenth century Venice had shifted its furnaces to Murano, ostensibly for fire safety, and by the sixteenth its craftsmen had perfected mirror glass — flat cristallo backed with tin and mercury. A single Venetian mirror could cost more than a painting by a master. The Republic granted glassworkers privileges and status, and forbade them to practise abroad on pain of death; agents pursued defectors across Europe. France broke the monopoly in the 1660s by simply hiring the runaways, at which point Venetian assassination attempts entered the historical record. The Hall of Mirrors at Versailles is, in part, a poaching trophy.
