Terrazzo hints for Friday, October 9, 2026
Mosaic № 63. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from nature.
The caption reads: “One death feeds the deep sea for fifty years.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 8 stones into a frame of 51 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms one region of 27; lapis blue forms 2 separate regions of 5, 1; moss green forms 2 separate regions of 4, 1; terracotta forms 2 separate regions of 12, 1.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Whale Fall
When a great whale dies its body sinks to a seafloor where food arrives as a thin drizzle of marine snow. Forty tonnes of it landing at once starts a succession that runs for decades. Sleeper sharks and hagfish strip the soft tissue within months. Then a bloom of worms, crustaceans and snails works the scraps for years. Finally bacteria colonise the bones themselves, breaking down the lipids and releasing sulphides that feed chemosynthetic mats and clams — the same chemistry that runs hydrothermal vents. Species have been found on whale falls and nowhere else. A single carcass builds an island of life, then hands it back.
