Mosaic № 64. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from history.
The caption reads: “The flowers were beautiful because they were sick.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 9 stones into a frame of 53 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Tulip Mania
In 1630s Holland the most prized tulips were the broken ones — petals streaked and feathered in contrasting colour, sold under names like Semper Augustus. Growers could not reliably reproduce them, which was the point: scarcity plus beauty. At the peak, single bulbs of the rarest varieties changed hands for the price of an Amsterdam house, in a futures market for flowers still underground. The crash came in February 1637 and ruined fewer people than legend claims. What nobody knew for three hundred years: the breaking was a mosaic virus, spread by aphids, slowly killing the very bulbs it made priceless.
