Mosaic № 65. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from cosmos.
The caption reads: “Two engineers spent a year cleaning pigeon droppings off the origin of the universe.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 11 stones into a frame of 68 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 5 separate regions of 14, 7, 1, 1, 1; lapis blue forms one region of 26; moss green forms 3 separate regions of 4, 1, 1; terracotta forms 6 separate regions of 6, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Oldest Light
In 1964 Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson were calibrating a horn antenna in New Jersey and could not get rid of a faint hiss. It came from every direction, day and night, all year. They evicted a pair of nesting pigeons and scrubbed the antenna of what they delicately called white dielectric material. The noise remained. Forty kilometres away, a Princeton group was preparing to look for exactly this: the cooled afterglow of the hot early universe, released when it first became transparent, 380,000 years after the beginning. The hiss was that light, stretched to microwaves by thirteen billion years of expansion.
