Mosaic № 66. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from history.
The caption reads: “A technique so good it was lost by being unnecessary.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 6 stones into a frame of 30 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 2 separate regions of 5, 5; lapis blue forms 2 separate regions of 3, 2; moss green forms 4 separate regions of 3, 2, 1, 1; terracotta forms 5 separate regions of 4, 1, 1, 1, 1.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Damascus Steel
Blades forged from wootz ingots — a crucible steel made in South India and Sri Lanka — carried a watered pattern of light and dark bands and a reputation for holding an edge that European smiths could not match. Modern electron microscopy has found carbon nanotubes and cementite nanowires in surviving examples, apparently produced by trace vanadium and other impurities in specific ore deposits, plus a slow, precise thermal cycle. When those particular mines were exhausted in the eighteenth century the recipe stopped working, and nobody knew why. The technique did not vanish in a fire. Its raw material simply ran out.
