The Seed Vault
A hundred and thirty metres into a sandstone mountain on Svalbard, eight hundred miles from the North Pole, sit over a million seed samples in sealed foil packets at eighteen below. The vault is a backup for the world's other seed banks, which are vulnerable to war, budget cuts and unplugged freezers. Its only withdrawal so far came in 2015, when the bank in Aleppo could no longer operate; the seeds were sent out, regrown in Lebanon and Morocco, and redeposited. Even without power, the permafrost would hold the chamber below freezing for weeks — which is the point of the mountain.
