Mosaic № 68. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from art.
The caption reads: “Paint into wet plaster and you have one day, and no second chances.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 8 stones into a frame of 38 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Buon Fresco
In true fresco, pigment ground in water is laid onto plaster that is still damp. As the lime cures it draws the colour in and grows a skin of calcium carbonate over it, so the painting is not on the wall — it is chemically part of the wall. That is why fresco outlasts almost everything else, and why it is unforgiving: only as much plaster is laid as can be painted before it sets, an area called the giornata, the day's work. On Michelangelo's ceiling you can still trace the seams. Mistakes cannot be painted over. They must be chiselled out.
