Terrazzo hints for Thursday, October 15, 2026
Mosaic № 69. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from nature.
The caption reads: “Six hundred volts, and it invented the battery first.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 7 stones into a frame of 43 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms one region of 6; lapis blue forms one region of 25; moss green forms 2 separate regions of 6, 1; terracotta forms one region of 5.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Electric Eel
An electric eel is not an eel but a knifefish, and four-fifths of its body is a battery: thousands of flattened cells called electrocytes stacked in series, each contributing a fraction of a volt, discharging together to deliver up to 860 volts. It uses low-voltage pulses to navigate and hunt by electric field, and high-voltage bursts to remotely trigger the muscles of hidden prey, making them twitch and give themselves away. When Alessandro Volta built the first chemical battery in 1800 he explicitly modelled his stack of alternating discs on the anatomy of the electric fish. The pile was an imitation of an animal.
