Terrazzo hints for Friday, October 16, 2026
Mosaic № 70. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from history.
The caption reads: “Eight thousand soldiers, and no two faces alike.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 9 stones into a frame of 52 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 6 separate regions of 12, 4, 3, 1, 1, 1; lapis blue forms 7 separate regions of 4, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1; moss green forms 7 separate regions of 3, 3, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1; terracotta forms 4 separate regions of 3, 1, 1, 1.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Terracotta Army
Farmers digging a well in 1974 broke into a pit holding an army: eight thousand life-sized clay soldiers, plus horses and chariots, buried to guard the first emperor of China. They were mass-produced with interchangeable moulded bodies, then individualised — ears, moustaches, hairstyles and expressions modelled by hand, so that no two faces repeat. They were originally painted in bright lacquer, most of which curls and flakes within minutes of exposure to dry air, so excavation now proceeds slowly and often stops deliberately. The emperor's own tomb mound, a short distance away, remains unopened. Ancient accounts describe rivers of mercury inside. Soil tests find mercury.
