Mosaic № 71. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from science.
The caption reads: “The cliché is true, and the reason is combinatorial.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 11 stones into a frame of 52 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
No Two Alike
A snow crystal begins as a hexagonal prism because of how water molecules hydrogen-bond, then grows arms whose exact shape depends on the temperature and humidity it passes through — conditions that change continuously as it falls. Branch tips grow fastest, which is why the six arms elaborate; the arms match each other because they share one journey, not because they communicate. Wilson Bentley photographed over five thousand crystals from a Vermont farmhouse and found no repeats. The mathematics is unforgiving: with roughly 10^18 water molecules arranged along a path of countless small choices, identical twins are not impossible, only outnumbered.
