Mosaic № 72. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from art.
The caption reads: “The repair is the point, and it is made of gold.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 12 stones into a frame of 61 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 8 separate regions of 5, 5, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1; lapis blue forms 5 separate regions of 9, 5, 3, 1, 1; moss green forms 7 separate regions of 5, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1; terracotta forms 5 separate regions of 6, 3, 1, 1, 1.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Kintsugi
When a bowl breaks, kintsugi rejoins the pieces with lacquer dusted with gold, so the fracture becomes the most conspicuous thing about the object — a bright seam mapping exactly how it failed. The technique is said to have begun when a shogun sent a damaged tea bowl to China for repair and got it back stapled with ugly metal cramps, prompting Japanese craftsmen to find something better. The philosophy attached later: a history of damage is worth displaying, and an object that has been broken and mended is not lesser. Collectors have been accused of breaking good pottery on purpose.
