Terrazzo hints for Tuesday, October 20, 2026
Mosaic № 74. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from art.
The caption reads: “Ten thousand temples in two centuries, then the river moved on.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 6 stones into a frame of 34 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Bagan
On a bend of the Irrawaddy, the kings of Bagan built with a fervour that is hard to parallel: over ten thousand temples, pagodas and monasteries raised between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, of which more than two thousand still stand. Merit-making drove it — each structure funded by a donor buying a better rebirth — until so much land and labour was tied up in tax-exempt religious estates that the kingdom's finances buckled. Mongol pressure finished it. Earthquakes have shaken the plain repeatedly since, most recently in 2016. From the air at dawn the mist sits at temple height, and only the spires show.
