Mosaic № 75. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.

Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?

Today's subject comes from cosmos.

The caption reads: “A hundred trillion pass through you every second.”

Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words

You place 7 stones into a frame of 40 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.

Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.

The answer: what the mosaic shows

The Ghost Particle

Neutrinos barely interact with matter at all: a beam could cross a light-year of lead with most of it emerging. Wolfgang Pauli proposed them in 1930 to rescue the conservation of energy in radioactive decay, and apologised in writing for inventing a particle nobody could ever detect. It took twenty-six years. Detectors now are enormous — thousands of tonnes of water or ice, buried deep to screen out everything else — and they catch a handful of events a day. When a nearby star died in 1987, twenty-four neutrinos arrived hours before the light, because they left the collapsing core directly while the photons had to fight their way out.
