Mosaic № 78. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from history.
The caption reads: “Their seawalls got stronger for two thousand years. Ours crumble in fifty.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 10 stones into a frame of 51 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
Roman Concrete
Modern marine concrete degrades as seawater attacks the steel and the binder. Roman harbour concrete does the opposite. Their mix of volcanic ash, lime and seawater reacts over decades to grow interlocking crystals of aluminous tobermorite through the matrix, and the material toughens. Recent work found another trick: lumps of quicklime left deliberately unmixed act as reservoirs, so when a crack lets water in, the lime dissolves and recrystallises, sealing the crack by itself. Pliny wrote that such structures became a single stone mass, impregnable to the waves and stronger each day. He was describing the chemistry accurately.
