Mosaic № 85. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from science.
The caption reads: “The slowest experiment ever run, and almost nobody has seen a drop fall.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 9 stones into a frame of 55 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Pitch Drop
In 1927 a physicist in Brisbane heated a lump of pitch, poured it into a funnel, and let it settle for three years before cutting the stem. Pitch looks like a solid — you can shatter it with a hammer — but it is a liquid of enormous viscosity, roughly a hundred billion times that of water. Nine drops have fallen in nearly a century. Nobody witnessed any of the first eight: the custodian who watched for decades stepped out for a cup of tea and missed the 1988 drop, and died shortly before the next. A webcam finally caught one in 2014.
