Mosaic № 86. Three hints, from a gentle nudge to the full answer. Open only as many as you need.
Hint 1: what kind of picture is it?
Today's subject comes from history.
The caption reads: “Two continents joined by a wire, and the first message took sixteen hours.”
Hint 2: the Laws, in plain words
You place 11 stones into a frame of 63 cells. Every cell is filled exactly once.
- Kinship. Same-coloured stones that touch make a region. Today: gold forms 3 separate regions of 8, 5, 4; lapis blue forms 4 separate regions of 4, 4, 1, 1; moss green forms 4 separate regions of 18, 1, 1, 1; terracotta forms 5 separate regions of 6, 6, 1, 1, 1.
- Solitude. No two sun cells may touch, not even corner to corner.
- The Vein. The vein cells must form one unbroken path between the frame's two notches, with no branches and no loops.
Start with the largest region the Laws name: it has the fewest ways to fit.
The answer: what the mosaic shows
The Cable
Laying a telegraph cable across the Atlantic in 1858 required two warships meeting mid-ocean, splicing, and steaming in opposite directions. It worked briefly — Queen Victoria's ninety-nine-word greeting to President Buchanan took sixteen hours to transmit — then failed within weeks after an engineer raised the voltage to speed things up and cooked the insulation. It took eight more years, a bankrupt company, a civil war, and the largest ship in the world to lay a cable that lasted. When it did, news between London and New York went from ten days to minutes. Financial markets on two continents began, for the first time, to share a present tense.
