What is the best puzzle game app?

The best puzzle game app is the one you still enjoy opening after a month. That depends on how you like to play, so it helps to know what to look for.

What should I look for in a puzzle app?

Start with the kind of thinking you want. Logic puzzles ask you to deduce. Matching puzzles ask you to spot patterns. Spatial puzzles ask you to fit pieces together.

Then look at the way the app is built around the puzzle. A few questions are worth asking before you download.

Each answer tells you whether the app will suit a quiet evening or a short commute.

Which puzzle apps feel calm?

Calm comes from design choices, not from soft colours alone. An app feels calm when nothing rushes you and nothing asks for attention you did not offer.

Look for a gentle pace and clear rules. Look for a finish line, so the puzzle ends and you can put the phone down. Reviews and the App Store page usually show whether an app respects these things.

If you want more ideas, our guide to how to play Terrazzo shows one calm approach in full.

Where does Terrazzo fit?

Terrazzo is a daily mosaic puzzle for iPhone and iPad. You get one puzzle a day, and it is the same for everyone. You fit coloured stones into a frame so the day's Laws hold.

When every Law holds, the colours settle into a picture of something real, with a short story. There is no timer, no ads and no account.

The three Laws are simple to state:

Most days use only one or two of them. That keeps each puzzle small enough to finish in a sitting.

Is it free?

The daily puzzle is free to play. TERRAZZO+ adds the archive of past mosaics, Stillwater and Solve DNA, and it is free for everyone for now. Past days in the archive open with keys you earn by solving the daily puzzle.

The leaderboard counts unaided solves only. That means no hints, no salvages and no seat marks.

What if I get stuck?

Being stuck is part of any good puzzle, and a small nudge is fine. Every day has three hints. The first arrives at 00:00 UTC as a gentle nudge. The second, at 08:00 UTC, states the Laws in plain words. The third, at 16:00 UTC, gives the answer.

You can choose how much help you want, and when. Solve it alone and you keep a leaderboard-eligible result. Take a hint and you still finish a lovely mosaic.

How do I decide?

Try one app for a week before you judge it. Notice whether you feel calmer or more hurried afterwards. Notice whether you want to return, or feel you ought to.

If a quiet daily puzzle sounds right, Terrazzo is built for that. If you want something faster or louder, other apps may suit you better, and that is a fair choice.
